An early film scoop, capturing the South African president on film

This film was such a scoop, its authorship has been contested for over 100 years. The Warwick Trading Company had connections with several cameramen in South Africa before the Boer War, two of whom, Edgar Hyman and Joe Rosenthal, laid claim to capturing this portrait.

Whoever was behind the camera, contemporary audiences would have no problem identifying the man who climbs into the carriage in this film. By the time it reached Britain, the Boer War was underway and 'Oom Paul' (Uncle Paul) was a villain, derided by all.
