The Wonderful Story
A farmer curses his brother and ex-fiancée when they marry after he is paralysed in an accident. Will a new arrival heal old wounds?
Overview
Paralysed in an accident, a farmer is consumed by bitterness when his ex-fiancée takes the (arguably harsh) decision to marry his brother instead. Will the arrival of their newborn son reconcile the trio? An optimistic turn of events was a common feature in silent melodramas of this period, in this case one that may require considerable suspension of disbelief.
Director Graham Cutts was a prolific figure in 1920s British cinema, and mentor to a young Alfred Hitchcock. Lead actress Lilian Hall-Davis would later star in two of Hitchcock's silent features, The Ring (1927) and The Farmer's Wife (1928), but her career did not survive the transition to sound. She committed suicide in 1933.
