Arncliffe Village Sports and Fete
There is excitement in the air in this small Yorkshire village as Arncliffe host their annual village fete and fell run in summer 1976.
From the collection of:

Overview
A British summer fete is recognisable to many people, but their individual eccentric quirks make each one unique. Arncliffe’s 1976 fete features “Cumberland Wrestling”, a fine example of an unorthodox local novelty, which steals the show in this short film. A local man also provides us with detailed commentary on the proceedings, including the nonappearance of Emmerdale’s cast to open the event.
Arncliffe, the original home of TV’s Emmerdale Farm, continues to hold a fete every August on the village green. Events like “Cumberland Wrestling” and fell running feature every year, in addition to the keenly contested themed fancy dress competition for children. Although fashions and technology has changed since the 1970s in Arncliffe, very little else has.
