Sea Scout Camp at Dale

Ropes are cast off, lock gates opened and they're away! Brother Alfred checks his watch to confirm they've caught the ebb tide.

The 28th Cardiff Sea Scouts, a troop formed of past-pupils of the De La Salle Preparatory School, Cardiff, are sailing from their base in the city's Bute East Dock to camp at Dale, Pembrokeshire. The Brenig Jones family visit twins Terence and Paul on Parents' Day and bring a cake to share. When it's all over, and the last bit of rubbish has been buried, a Curran's lorry takes all the equipment – and possibly some scouts - back home.

Brother Alfred [Herbert Guilfoyle] of the Order of the De La Salle Brothers was head teacher of the prep school 1946-62 and 1978-84. The Edward Curran Engineering Company was founded in 1903 by the stonemason son of an Irish stonemason settled in Cardiff. The company built furnaces, produced munitions for two world wars plus enamelled metalware. The Cardiff factory (at which Shirley Bassey once had a job) closed in 2005, the site being used for housing. William Brenig Jones (1918-1978), who shot this footage, was born in Pentre in the Rhondda. He married Joan Mary Oakey and they had 4 children: twins Terence and Paul, Carmel and Martin. William became Head of Finance at the Welsh Office.
