Overview

This is a truly inspirational short film that candidly showcases the profound commitment that young Parkgate employees made in order to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Awards. We follow new employees from their induction through to the completion of their award, which is designed to benefit both themselves and the local community.

Parkgate Iron and Steel Company was located in Parkgate in South Yorkshire. Up until the waning demand for iron and steel in the early 1970s, the company remained a top employer of young people in the area. As the film states, young men entering work in the area largely had a binary choice between “pit or forge”. The Duke of Edinburgh scheme was founded by Prince Philip in 1956. The award recognises young adults who have completed self-improvement courses over 1-4 years. Since its inception, the completion rate has increased each year.
