Overview
The Royal South Western Yacht Club's sailing season showcases different classes of wooden hulled yachts with a local commentary. The Passage Race to Dartmouth in Devon is filmed setting off from Plymouth Sound. The film camera accompanies the yachts in the the Passage Race to Fowey in Cornwall where the boats are Troy Class built to a 1929 design by Archie Watty. The Club also hosts the Sutton Harbour Regatta and the Plymouth Jollyboat Championship.
The Club was founded in 1827 as the Port of Plymouth Royal Clarence Regatta Club and became the Royal Western Yacht Club in 1833. The Club is still active in racing. The world's first ocean race, the Fastnet was sailed under the burgee or flag of the Royal Western Yacht Club in 1925. The Club is based at Queen Anne's Battery since 1989. Regular races such as the Fastnet, the Observer Single-Handed TransAtlantic Race (OSTAR), the Two-Handed Round Britain and Ireland Race as well as the passage races and annual Sutton Harbour Regatta are still held. In 2011 Plymouth hosted the America's Cup World Series and in 2016 Plymouth hosted the current OSTAR, the Transat Bakerly.
