World's Biggest Lock: Opened at Newport by Prince Arthur of Connaught

The good ship Liberty, Lord Tredegar's steam yacht, gracefully cuts the ribbon as the first ship to pass through Newport's Great Sea Lock.

The Great Sea Lock, 1000ft long and 100ft wide, enabled ocean-going vessels to enter from the Bristol Channel without worry of tidal height. The film offers an impressive view of its opening, performed by Prince Arthur of Connaught, a grandson of Queen Victoria and the future King George VI. 'Liberty' became the first ship to pass through, gracefully transporting the Prince to the celebrations.
