Bent bodies, and us and them – disabled people in the Seventies workplace
“Bend body, bent mind” is how one participant shockingly describes attitudes towards disabled employees in this early 70s film on workplace adjustments. Despite a worrying tendency to speak of disabled people as “them”, this documentary demonstrates clearly how workplace aids and adaptations are an important part of creating equality of opportunity in the labour market.
Many workplace adjustments for employees in this film are still useful. Most are now subsidised by the Access to Work fund, run by the UK Department of Work and Pensions.
