Whitley Bay (Northumberland Coast)
Pack your swimming trunks and a time machine - Whitley Bay in the 1920s is the next hot holiday destination.
Overview
Oh we do like to be beside the seaside, but this film is testament to the fact that our coastal towns today are often pale shadows of their past. The North Tyneside resort of Whitley Bay was clearly once a booming, vibrant place in the summer months, filled with holidaymakers. Many of those on the rides at the Spanish City funfair or braving the North Sea for a paddle were from Glasgow, heading south for their annual break.
The film was produced for promotional purposes to encourage new holidaymakers to the town, and it also highlights the natural charms that still make the area attractive for a more sedentary visit today.
