Performing the ancient art of maypole dancing on the village green at Wellow.
Wellow in Nottinghamshire is one of the few Midlands villages to continue the tradition of maypole dancing with a permanent pole on the village green. The village, situated in what was once Sherwood Forest, has a fascinating history dating back to the twelfth century and also lays claim to some of the exploits of Robin Hood. As this colourful reel of amateur film shot by an unidentified filmmaker shows the event was a popular draw back in the mid-1960s.
