Overview

The villagers of Durweston are visited by Dorset County Council's Blue Van which is a mobile infopoint providing leaflets and advice for rural communities. This is part of a film called Village Ventures and features rural projects in Dorset and Yorkshire. A specialised rural office exists to offer advice and public information on a range of issues.

Durweston upholds a tradition known as shroving where children are led around the village on Shrove Tuesday calling on local people and singing songs and offering flowers. The custom is for those visited to offer bread or food to the children in return. The origin of this is unknown but it has been said the begging custom was part of a medieval dole system.
