Three Linotype Machines

Early advertising film demonstrating the machinery which revolutionised the printing industry

Advert 1900 1 mins

Overview

The linotype machine revolutionised the typesetting and printing industry with its hot metal line-casting system. Operated by three men, three different models of this typesetting wonder are demonstrated.

Originally filmed on large format 68mm film stock, from its similarity to other films in the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company 1902 catalogue this is presumed to be a demonstration of the linotype machines of a particular company. It would have been designed for advertising use as a Mutoscope reel, rather than as a standard Biograph commercial film. It does not appear in the American catalogue and so the film is thought to be British.
