This England - Kent: Village Scenes and County Fair
Regimental displays and a maypole dance are highlights of a royal visit by the Prince of Wales to the Kent County Fair
Overview
Beginning with village scenes of a blacksmith fitting a horseshoe and fruit pickers enjoying a plum duff, this film by John Wilson goes on to document the range of activities at the Kent County Fair, which has a special royal visit by the Prince of Wales. The "youth of Kent" greet him with an impressive flag-waving exercise and a whole range of displays follow, including maypole dancing and a tug of war. Keep an eye out for Jack in the Green!
Filmmaker John Wilson shot several other This England films in the 1930s - an ambitious project to document life and landscape.
