The Making of Of Time and the City
In new interviews, the director Terence Davies and the film's producers and archive producer discuss the making of the film and the inspirations behind it.
Overview
Of Time and the City was commissioned to celebrate Liverpool's year as European City of Culture in 2008. Almost entirely comprised of archive footage of Liverpool from the time of Terence Davies' birth to date, the film wowed critics at Cannes and was released to great critical and popular acclaim.
Born in 1945 into a Catholic working-class family of ten children, Terence Davies worked for 12 years as a clerk in a shipping office and a bookkeeper before going to Drama School. There he wrote the script for 'Children' which he directed four years later in 1976, and forms part of the Terence Davies Trilogy, along with 'Madonna and Child' (completed at The National Film School as his graduation film in 1980) and 'Death and Transfiguration' which was backed by the BFI. The Trilogy and his subsequent work - Distant Voices, Still Lives; The Long Day Closes; The Neon Bible; The House of Mirth - have put Davies on the map as one of our greatest filmmakers, a sensitive visionary whose work is illuminating and heartfelt, always exploring the nature of love, memory and the toll of time.
