The Dirt Inside

A slab of clay is wrought, eviscerated and shattered to render an account of date rape with staggering effectiveness

Animation & Artists Moving Image 1998 6 mins

Overview

Few methods could be more fitting to explore such a dark subject. A flat slab of muddy clay is scratched and manipulated to set out the story of a date that ends in sexual assault. At first the medium seems delightfully playful, heart-filled eyes and looping hair. But as the events turn darker you realise that this is the rendering of the victim’s memory – scratched with a sharp edge and gouged with forceful pressure. The final image is left to desiccate, the life before shattered into tiny pieces.
