The Debutante

A 1930s society debut for a spirited young woman is disrupted by her decision to bring a hyena from London Zoo to the party.

Lizzy Hobbs brings visual splendour and controlled anarchy to her adaptation of Leonora Carrington’s short story. Her images have a fresh immediacy; touch the screen and you almost expect your fingers to drip with ink and paint, captured while still wet beneath the rostrum camera.

Hobbs’s background in printmaking gives her work a distinctive texture, enriching her playful explorations of the lives of artists and historical figures.
