        Overview

Meat Inspector Ralph talks about the lamb production in Britain. Domestic consumption of lamb has fallen in favour of chicken. Meat consumption is measured in tonnes of carcass weight or kilograms of retail weight per capita. The UK’s Lamb consumption is 4.7kg per capita and low compared to Greece at 12.8kg and Mongolia at 45.1kg. America’s lamb consumption is very low at only 0.4kg per capita.

The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) collect a 15 million pound government levy each year through the sale of cattle and sheep. They regulate the market of the sale of beef and lamb products including awarding products that meet industry standards with the Quality Standard and Assured Food Standard Red Tractor labels.
