Sunderland Roker Regatta and Festival August Bank Holiday 1926

Roll up, roll up, for all the fun of the fair as Sunderland celebrates the August bank holiday.

Non-Fiction 1926 5 mins Silent

Overview

An eccentric mix of pageantry, electric dragons (the stars of a scenic railway ride), a Charlie Chaplin look-a-like and a religious chaplain all feature in this enchanting film of Sunderland's bank holiday festivities. While the rowing regatta isn't shown, recognisable locations include Seaburn and Mowbray Park, one of the oldest municipal parks in the North East of England.

This local topical would have screened in Sunderland as part of a mixed cinema programme. Curiously the final scene seems to show a memorial procession - a rather more sombre affair.
