        Overview

The winter of 1968 brought heavy snow, covering Roath Park in a thick white blanket. Many residents woke up to find they could not drive to work and were forced to walk whilst others took the opportunity to don their skis and do a spot of skiing down some of the steeper parts of the area. In the park, the evergreen trees were white, the snow weighing down their branches. The ducks, however were unperturbed and continued on their merry way as the lake had not frozen over.

The picturesque views of Roath Park are contrasted with the chaos the snow has bought to Queen's Street where cars have sullied the whiteness and turned it brown. There is a sense of community as people shovel snow from doorways, and help push start cars that have become stuck. But it isn't all work - some children have built a snow fort! This film is from a collection shot by Chris Jenkins (1901-1990), proprietor of a hair salon in Cardiff, a keen amateur artist, astronomer and film-maker. He was a stalwart of Cardiff Cine Society for 45 years, becoming its president.
