These tantalising glimpses of mid-century Shanghai were found among a collection of films donated by a closed-down stock-shot library, and were probably snipped from a documentary – but which? The fragmentary views of a wedding procession, kites, firemen dousing a blazing building, a bird market and street acrobats are curious bookends to a lengthy shot of toy dogs spinning on a dumb waiter.
