Overview
Royal Tunbridge Wells in the 1950s is the subject of this well made film by the Regency Film Unit. Using the device of a wandering cameraman we follow him into the centre of the town, stopping at various landmarks and buildings, while passing shops and shoppers going about their business. A Gala Procession is filmed featuring a variety of decorated floats with historical themes. Then it's off to the historic Pantiles for a drink of spa water before catching the bus home.
The Regency Film Unit was an alternative title for the Tunbridge Amateur Film Unit, first coined after its members met in a room of the same name. The club filmed many creative portraits of Tunbridge Wells and its residents as well as filming various events like parades, agricultural shows and firework displays. They also made amusing and often sophisticated amateur dramas and trick films like Backwards.
