Robert Farnon
Engrossing interview with the eloquent Canadian composer.
Overview
This engrossing unedited conversation between Bernard Braden and a fellow Canadian, composer Robert Farnon, was part of Now and Then, Braden's ambitious (but never completed) interviews project. Farnon offers articulate - and opinionated - commentary on the relationships between musical forms: classical, jazz, electronic, pop and his own specialism, light orchestral music. They also touch on Farnon's Guernsey tax exile.
Farnon wrote popular light orchestral compositions such as Jumping Bean, scored or wrote themes for numerous films and TV shows including Colditz (1972-4) and arranged and conducted albums by several of the world's best vocalists. Among his most lasting achievements are his gorgeous arrangements for Sinatra Sings Great Songs from Great Britain, Frank Sinatra's only LP recorded outside the USA - an experience Braden sadly doesn't ask Farnon about.
