        Regis Review

This amateur newsreel from Bognor Regis is a real gem. Filmed in the late 1930s it captures a mood of fun and frivolity, despite the worsening international scene.

        Overview

Bognor looks such a happy place in this amateur newsreel from the late thirties. We see numerous town improvements like the Moderne-style concert venue as well the Fire Brigade in action - using breathing apparatus. There are various beauty pageants followed by the crowning of the Carnival Queen Barbara Morrison. Local celebrity Yvonne Arnaud is seen relaxing in her garden. We also see colourful processions for the Carnival and for the 1937 Coronation which ends the film.

French-born Yvonne Arnaud was a singer, pianist and actress whose career spanned many decades and several styles of performance - including operetta, farce and serious drama. Living for many years in Guildford, Surrey, Arnaud was posthumously honoured in 1965 by having the town's new theatre named after her. Sir Alan Cobham, who also appears in this film, was an aviator who made pioneering flights to Australia and other parts of the British Empire. He formed the hugely popular 'Cobham's Flying Circus' which toured the country giving many people, like Bognor's Carnival Queen Miss Morrison, their first experience of flight.
