Presentation to J.O.D. Wade Pontypridd Hospital 1935

Jimmy Wade OBE, FRCS, retires in 1935 after 21 years service as hon. consulting surgeon at Pontypridd & District Hospital and is presented with gifts including hand-painted minatures of himself and his wife, Kate. Born in Llanelli, he had worked at cottage and miners' hospitals in the Valleys where commemorative plaques indicate his commitment. His 4 sons – one of whom observed his first operation aged 4 - all entered the medical profession, 3 becoming surgeons.

During WWI, James Owen David Wade (1885-1952) was consulting surgeon to the Prince of Wales Hospital for Limbless Sailors and Soldiers, Wales and Monmouthshire, Cardiff, and was created OBE for his services there [See 'The Opening of the Prince of Wales Hospital …' in 1918]. Maud M Williams, president of the hospital and the first to make a speech, is seen sitting on a bench with Gladys H Katherine [Kate] Wade (nee Jones). Dr Kingsley Lewis (chair of the hon. medical staff) speaks next. His medical practice was in Gelliwastad Road, the Harley Street of Pontypridd.
