Port Sunlight
In picturesque Port Sunlight, everywhere we see "charming houses and gardens for the happy workers"
Overview
"The remarkable rise of Port Sunlight is one of the greatest events in industrial history". This sweeping claim is scarcely an exaggeration, judging by the activities of the Lever family, whose philanthropic ambitions are shown to be nearly as epic in scale as their industrial aspirations. The family, who owned the Sunlight Soap factory, aimed to support practically every aspect of the lives of their workers. This ranged from the provision of charming cottages to sports facilities, a pub and even a fire brigade to serve the village of Port Sunlight, named after their soap brand.
Lever Brothers' successful soap manufacturing business expanded and in 1930 it merged with a Dutch margarine company to form Unilever, still one of the world's largest multinational consumer goods companies.
