Peter and Ben

Two 'black sheep' form an unusual and enduring bond in the Black Mountains.

Documentary 2007 10 mins

Overview

Nestled in a forgotten valley of the Black Mountains lives Peter, a self-confessed dropout who sought self-sufficient isolation to put himself in “an extraordinary and unique situation”. A tough but peaceable life were the rewards of a deliberate severance from society, family and the past. Enter Ben, a fellow black sheep (but of true ovine origin), who brings companionship, even friendship, into Peter’s life.

Pinny Grylls’ film is a model short; perfectly structured, beautifully detailed, and respectful to its subject. But despite vital contributions from the filmmaker, Peter, and the landscape that surrounds them, it is Ben who emerges as the star. Likened to Cary Grant by Peter, there is something about Ben’s comic demeanour that makes you realise the comparison is spot on.
