The Beatles' instant classic Penny Lane is colourfully conveyed by this 1960s short film, shot around Liverpool

Drama 1967 3 mins Silent

Overview

The words to the Paul McCartney-penned Beatles classic Penny Lane are vividly illustrated in this short 1960s montage film, which juxtaposes characters inspired by the song with suburban street scenes and St. George's Square statuary.

Released as a splendid double-A side single in 1967, along with John Lennon's equally excellent Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane was somehow kept off the top spot of the pop charts by balladeer Engelbert Humperdinck's mega-hit Release Me.
