Ladies' International Golf
Join the crowds and make a pilgrimage around the breath-taking Royal Portrush Golf Course. Who will make their way to the final to challenge Scotland's legendary golfer?
From the collection of:

Overview
Royal Portrush Golf Club provides a fittingly dramatic setting for the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championships. Crowds flock to this coastal course to watch Valentine inflict a 7 and 6 walloping on the American, Barbara Romack. This exciting victory comes almost 20 years after her first win. After abandoning her clubs during WWII to drive trucks, Jessie's triumphant return to golf would earn her the first female MBE for services in to golf just 4 years after this film.
Founded in 1888, Royal Portrush is renowned for its long association with ladies’ golf. In 1895, it became the first links outside of England to house the British Ladies’ Championship. One of the most challenging courses in the world; it has since hosted the competition on numerous other occasions. A darling of the American press, Romack’s golfing prowess would not only bring her to the cover of Sports Illustrated, but earned her an invitation to the White House, where she befriended President Dwight Eisenhower. These rushes come from the collection of National Museums Northern Ireland and were originally produced by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.
