Home and Away No. 20
Is that a dinosaur in the shipyard? A new Jurassic-looking crane arrives on the Clyde, plus a look at tyre making and a Scottish regatta.
Overview
Crane your neck at a new Jurassic-looking crane in the Fairfield shipyard on the Clyde. Though it is not one of the titanic cantilever cranes, four of which still stand, this handsome beast made a great contribution to the Glasgow skyline. "Home and Away" was a promotional film magazine sponsored by Babcock and Wilcox Ltd between 1955 and 1960, with this film being the final issue.
The American firm of Babcock and Wilcox had opened an office in Scotland in 1881, and a decade later an independent British company was formed. The company was most notable for its industrial boilers, illustrated by the first story in this issue about the India Tyre company at Inchinnan. The last item is a more recreational affair with handsome-looking yachts knifing through the water in nearby Rothesay Bay.
