Overview
“It’s a real man’s job for life.” This recruitment advert for a “career in modern mining” is one of many made by the National Coal Board Film Unit. Aimed at 15-18 year old boys, it makes clear that it’s “the big man’s” choice of career. The film’s spirit of bravado is not wholly in keeping with the variable fortunes of the industry in the 1960s - which saw a significant reduction in the overall number of coalminers.
