Overview
Past the Evan Roberts shop on Queen Street march the 28th Cardiff Sea Scouts, led by “Skip” (Brother Alfred, head of the De La Salle School) in a parade through the city along with Boy Scouts and Girl Guides. The Archbishop of Cardiff takes the salute outside St David's Cathedral, where he is later seen with a host of choristers and clerics. The annual 'Flag Day' takes place at the school in Richmond Crescent, with prize giving and the changeover of flag-bearers.
John Aloysius Murphy (1905-95), Archbishop of Cardiff 1961-83, was noted for his active ecumenicalism and known as “The Builder”, owing to the 12 new secondary schools, 33 new primary schools and 39 new churches he had built for his flock. Brother Alfred [Herbert Guilfoyle] was head of the De La Salle (Preparatory) School 1946-62 and 1978-84. The choristers sang at St David's - Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral. William Brenig Jones (1918-1978), who shot this footage, was born in Pentre, Rhondda. He married Joan Mary Oakey and they had 4 children: twins Terence and Paul (Sea Scouts), Carmel (Girl Guide), and Martin (chorister and later Sea Scout). William became Head of Finance at the Welsh Office.
