Co-operation in Middlesbrough

Local co-operative society at its peak

Advert 1939 15 mins

Overview

Community ties from soup to nuts (and bread and milk), with a look at the Middlesbrough Co-operative society at its peak

The benefits of the Co-op to the Middlesbrough community are clear in this attractive information film. When a local cine club made this film in the late 1930s, the society had 130 stores and seven decades of experience under its belt. The new Linthorpe Road 'Emporium' seen under construction here was set to become its crown jewel. This film includes a look behind the scenes at milk and bread production and a glimpse of the new 'pantry stores'.
