Overview
This insightful documentary by Barry Cockroft focuses on the experiences of three 16 year old girls as they complete their final year at Ryburn Secondary Modern School in Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire. Jacqueline wishes to continue her education at grammar school and become a teacher like her father, while Kathleen and Julie can't get out of there quick enough for a job at the local mill. All three are remarkably frank about their expectations as they face big changes in their lives.
In 1972 the school leaving age had been raised to 16. 1974 saw the first output of 16 year old school leavers.
