Cambrian Country

A train ride up Mount Snowdon is among the thrills in this picturesque advert for Welsh holidays

Travelogue 1953 13 mins

Overview

This travelogue shows off the scenic qualities of west Wales, from the medieval castles of Manorbier and Pembroke to the spectacular landscape of Snowdonia. Narrator Alvar Lidell takes the viewer on a precarious mountain train journey; his boldly poetic voiceover, in conjunction with musical excerpts from Wagner, lends the film both majesty and mysticism.

A new era of British holidaymaking dawned following WWII, providing the perfect audience for this kind of travel programming. As if demonstrating how a holiday through the Welsh "wonderland" could look in practice, the film takes us on a logical journey; south to north, through increasingly rugged scenery.
