Overview
Our journey begins in the hamlet of Buckler's Hard, situated on the banks of the Beaulieu River. Soon we're travelling along leafy roads towards the village of Lyndhurst, the administrative centre of the New Forest National Park.
Built in the 18th century, by the 2nd Duke of Montagu, the hamlet of Buckler's Hard, originally named Montagu Town, was intended to be developed as a free port for trade with the West Indies. Its proximity to the New Forest ensured there was a good supply of trees for shipbuilding and many ships in Nelson's fleet were built there.
