Bivalves Beware!
Gin, gingerbread and fresh oysters... a heady annual cocktail for the Mayor of Colchester as he opens the Colne Fishery
Overview
The annual opening of the Colne Oyster Fishery near Brightlingsea is an age-old tradition, although like many rituals it roots are somewhat uncertain. The need to protect a local resource from over-fishing is clear, though - but the reason the first catch is washed down with gin and gingerbread by the Mayor of Colchester and friends is less so! Look out for the unexpected interruption of ceremonies when the drinks and nibbles are sent flying.
This version of the story is over twice as long as than one included in the general newsreel release and was likely intended for local screenings only.
