A Trip to Petticoat Lane Market
Watch bargain hunters at the world famous and colourful Petticoat Lane Market in this nostalgic film from Alan Stingemore which also includes a train ride and a tennis tournament
From the collection of:
Overview
The film begins at East London's Petticoat Lane Market where we see a variety of stalls and shoppers hoping for a bargain or three. Also on hand are the obligatory roast chestnut vendors and a man bearing a placard with a gloomy warning. We're next onboard a Southern region train returning to Canterbury before we join a group sitting in deckchairs and sun-loungers watching a tennis tournament in the Kent village of Bridge. The winning couple hold up a tournament shield.
Between the 1950s and 1990s Alan Stingemore made a considerable number of films covering a wide variety of subjects with an emphasis on railways and cinemas in particular. His films often capture memorable events as in this film, as well as last 'glimpses' of subjects that were about to disappear forever.
