Overview
Encompassing birth, marriage and death, Yang’s sweeping story follows the emotionally messy lives of the Jian family over the course of one year. Struggling with work, N.J. (Nien-Jen Wu) faces up to a betrayal he committed decades earlier, while his daughter Ting-Ting (Kelly Lee) gets entangled with the love affairs of her neighbour, and youngest child Yang-Yang (Jonathan Chang) burrows into his photography hobby to distract from his dying grandmother and absent mother.
Winner of Best Director at Cannes, Edward Yang has created an extraordinary and warm-hearted family epic, a beautiful masterstroke from beginning to end. Ranked joint 90th in the 2022 Sight and Sound Great Films of All Time poll.
