L' enfer aka Torment

A husband's jealousy and suspicion of his wife drive him to appalling extremes in Claude Charbrol’s unsettling psychological thriller.

Paul (Francois Cluzet) runs a picturesque lakeside resort with the help of his wife, Nelly, (the exquisite Emmanuelle Beart). As financial pressures of running the hotel mount, Paul becomes increasingly preoccupied with irrational thoughts about his wife’s infidelity, and what starts as a troubling obsession steadily spirals into disturbing projections of jealousy and paranoia.

Cluzet and Beart give career best performances as the husband and wife tearing each other apart in Claude Chabrol’s unsettling psychological thriller, itself an adaptation from the screenplay by Henri Georges Clouzot’s for his unfinished 1964 masterpiece.
