Overview

Alone in an isolated cottage, a writer (Erland Josephson) summons his conscience/muse (a superb Lena Endre), who recounts her painful story of adultery, jealousy, guilt and recrimination. Ingmar Bergman scripts this semi-autobiographical drama directed by his closest collaborator, Liv Ullmann, and this tale of a woman caught between two men indulging in increasingly dangerous emotional games was inspired by a holiday he took years earlier in Paris; its personal derivation shows in the film’s raw, unflinching emotional honesty.
