Overview

Ennis and Jack are two shepherds hired to work on the mountains of Wyoming in the summer of 1963. They slowly become sexually and emotionally entangled but struggle to develop their relationship in the repressive American West. Their lives move in different directions, but the pair continue to meet, developing a lifelong connection they struggle to maintain as they start their own families.

Controversial at the time of its release, Brokeback Mountain is now widely regarded as a landmark of LGBTQ+ cinema and a milestone in mainstream queer representation, sparking ongoing debate about masculinity, repression and the visibility of queer relationships on screen. Heath Ledger’s untimely death added further poignancy to a story already marked by emotional restraint and longing.
