Minari
Lee Isaac Chung's sweeping story of a Korean-American family in search of the American Dream, winner of two Sundance prizes and now nominated for six Academy Awards.
Director: Lee Isaac Chung
Overview
A tender and sweeping story about what roots us, Minari follows a Korean-American family that moves to a tiny Arkansas farm in search of their own American Dream. The family home changes completely with the arrival of their sly, foul-mouthed, but incredibly loving grandmother. Amidst the instability and challenges of this new life in the rugged Ozarks, Minari shows the undeniable resilience of family and what really makes a home.
Since its debut at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival (where it won two major prizes) Lee Isaac Chung's warm and intimately humanist drama has garnered countless accolades, and looks set to become a defining portrait of American emmigration to rank alongside Werner Herzog's Stroszek and Jan Troell's The Emigrants. It is now also one of the favourites for the 2021 awards season with six nominations apiece at both the Academy Awards and BAFTA Film Awards. Minari is supported by an BFI Audience Award, using funds from the National Lottery.
