Lotfy Nathan’s gripping debut follows the torturous life of Ali, a young Tunisian fighting for a better life for him and his sisters amid a climate of pervasive social inequality and unrest.

Drama 2022 90 mins

Director: Lotfy Nathan

Overview

After the unexpected death of his father, young Tunisian Ali (a remarkable Cannes winning performance by Adam Bessa) finds himself responsible for his two younger sisters as the threat of eviction hangs over them. Amid a climate of pervasive social inequality, corruption and injustice, Ali dreams of a better life in Europe but is forced to make a precarious living selling contraband gas at the local black market. What ensues is a formidable fight for dignity.

Writer-director Lotfy Nathan’s profoundly powerful debut is a modern-day parable about resistance, based on the harrowing true story of Mohamed Bouazizi, whose self-immolation roused the Arab Spring.
