Cynthia Erivo delivers a captivating performance as a young refugee, who after fleeing war-torn Liberia finds hope when she meets a fellow lost soul.
Director: Anthony Chen
Overview
After fleeing war-torn Liberia, Jaqueline (Cynthia Erivo), arrives on a Greek island. Traumatised, stateless, and struggling to survive, she offers massages to tourists on the beach for small change. But there is a beacon of hope when she strikes up a friendship with Callie (Alia Shawkat), an American tour guide and fellow lost soul.
Academy award nominated Cynthia Erivo delivers a powerful, captivating performance bolstered by a stirring soundtrack, written and performed by British music artist Laura Mvula and Erivo herself. A decade since his first feature Ilo Ilo won the Camera d’or at Cannes, and the Sutherland Award at the BFI London Film Festival, Singaporean director Anthony Chen delivers another assured, subtle and evocative portrait of friendship, and the value of hope in times of hardship.
