Trial and Triumph The Story of Venkata Rao of Hyderbad, South India

Dramatised story of a Hindu convert to Christianity: a Methodist film with a missionary message

Drama-documentary 1940 16 mins Silent

Overview

Something of a curio among the BFI National Archive's collection of Indian films, this is a stirring Christian drama of endurance and perseverance. An intertitle early in the film sums up its message: "Venkata Rao is a caste man who becomes a Christian, is persecuted but wins through." Apparently based on a true story, it was shot by The Rev. Wilfred Le Cato Edwards for the Methodist Missionary Society.
