Overview
Ray Young's skillfully made amateur film shows the construction of Trade Stand 57 at the Sussex County Agricultural Show. Held in Eastbourne's Hampden Park the film features the erection of the vast canvas marquee as well as its tower, made from Dexion slotted angle. We also see panoramas of the showground during construction. Once the adverts, flowers and fittings are in place the public are admitted. Also on show is a sheepdog trial and showjumping in the main arena.
Ray Young was an independent amateur film-maker as well an active member of the Eastbourne Cine Group. He filmed a series of local events in East Sussex including Stand 57, a film about making bailer twine in Hailsham and, with the Cine club, a film about the St Leonards-on-Sea outdoor lido. He also filmed family's visits to places further afield like London, Windsor, Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire.
