Look out for product placement - there's plenty of it in this promotional film for the Co-operative Wholesale Society's tea brand
Screen actors Charles Paton and Syd Crossley lend their fame to promote the Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS) brand. They would have been instantly recognisable to audiences when this advertising film was shown alongside features and newsreels in the early 1930s. Vast cargos of tea from India and Ceylon are shown arriving at the CWS' brand new warehouse on Ordsall Lane overlooking Pamona Dock in Salford.
The immense English and Scottish Joint CWS warehouse was erected in 1930 to meet the demands of the company's successful international tea business. Workers are shown, sifting, blending and packaging the tea which at the time claimed a fifth of the British market.
