Women's Olympiad
British "girl athletes" prove themselves in competition with women from around the world at Stamford Bridge.
Overview
World records tumble at the International and British Games for female athletes, held on 4 August 1924 at Stamford Bridge. One of the stars of the athletics track was London clerk Miss Mary Lines who, after breaking the 120m hurdles world record in her heat, then went on to break another with her win in the 250 metres in the afternoon.
25,000 spectators turned out for the Games, which were promoted in advance as an exciting spectacle. The News of the World noted the "most remarkable programme, such as has never been seen in this country in the history of athletics... In reality it will be the Olympic Games for Women."
