Beautiful balloon ascents at London's Hurlingham club and some impressive stunt flying

1916 4 mins Silent

Overview

Come fly, 1916-style. This enchanting look at early aviation includes some dreamlike, blue-tinted balloon ascents from earlier years, probably the 1909 race from the Hurlingham Club in London and a shot from the Zurich race of the same year. Cinema audiences were then treated to some thrilling shots of bi-planes doing stunt flying and a Taube monoplane - a "bomb dropper", according to the intertitle - being brought out of its hangar.

This film, produced by the Kineto Company, is sadly incomplete. Since one of the titles is numbered '84', it's likely this version was edited from a much longer film concerning all types of airborne craft which was released during the war when there was a shortage of films.
