At his 65th birthday celebrations, steelworker Tom Slater reflects that he's still a better man than many a youngster, and resolves that retirement is not for him - just yet. The state retirement age was established as 65 for men and 60 for women in 1948, the year this film was made. However, the government and business leaders also felt that "the country has to produce more or die" and retaining experienced workers was key to increasing productivity.
